Benefits of Burning Soy Candles

Written by Annabel Okeya

Unlike paraffin wax that is gotten from petroleum, soy wax is produced by hydrogenating soybean oil into a waxy solid.

It is softer, slower burning and less transparent than paraffin wax. Not to mention, safer for the environment.

The development of soy wax is credited to the U.S. agribusiness community. It was first commercially used in candles in the late 1990s. Soy has become very popular in recent years because it is from a renewable source.

At Seventh & Oak, we use a blend of soy and coconut waxes to make our candles. They're both from natural sources and contain no chemicals. Here are some reasons to choose soy wax candles over the other types:

Candles burn cleaner

Paraffin wax releases black soots while burning whereas, soy wax candles burn cleaner. You also do not have to worry about your walls or curtains changing into a dark colour due to the soots.

They are safer for the environment

Soy beans come from a renewable source and the ingredients are simple. If you have health issues, you want to stick to a wax that all the ingredients are known to you.

You get more life out of your candles

Candles made with soy wax burn approximately 50% slower. Meaning you get to extend the life of your candle and not have to refill as often.

Soy wax candles are free from toxins

When you burn a soy wax candle, rest assured that toxins like carcinogens will not be released into the air. Paraffin for example produces up to ten toxins - two of which are carcinogens. Carcinogen is known to be cancerous to humans.

Soy wax candles have a lower melting point

For those of us concerned about safety, soy wax has a lower melting point. This means if you accidentally spill melted soy wax on your skin, the risk of getting burned is low.
