Explaining the Most Popular Decor Styles
Knowing your decor style is key to creatively personalizing your space
READ TIME: 7 minutes
I’ve been meaning to write this post since my blog started. I know there’re lots and lots of content on the different decor styles, but I thought, “What the heck?” I could contribute a little something to this topic.
Didn’t really know a lot about decor styles until I started watching shows like Fixer Upper, Flip or Flop, Home to Win and Property Brothers. It was then I noticed that the designers always brought in the homeowner’s personality, incorporated pieces that meant something to them or decorated around a certain theme.
It’s funny how much you could learn from TV (it’s not always the devil). I started doing some research on the different interior decor styles and let me tell you, there are a lot – from Asian to Modern to Traditional. Heck, I even think ‘African’ should be a decor style too.
When you want to decorate your place, you don’t just want to mix and match here and there (that’s a decor style though, and it’s called Eclectic). You want to carefully select your pieces so that they all tie into your space and reflect you as a person. Not everyone knows how to bring different elements into a space and that’s why I felt the need to publish this post.
Knowing what each decor style entails will help you decide on how to decorate your own place.
This post will not only explain some decor styles that a layman can understand, but I’ve also decided to include where to shop for some of these pieces.
Each photo in this post has been carefully sourced, showing different parts of a house or apartment (living room, bedroom, kitchen and washroom) so you have a better idea and know what to expect. So, buckle up!
THE MOST POPULAR INTERIOR DECOR STYLES
I personally think someone needs to find a name and combine Bohemian and Eclectic decor styles because they are pretty much the same. Boho style features a combination of textures and patterns from different parts of the world. Think Moroccan rugs, hanging plants, tassels, handmade pieces, tapestries and saturated colours.
People with this style of decor literally throw “less is more” out the window. They like to mix and match different pieces like furniture, items collected from travel adventures and accessories. Bohemian styles are ideal for unconventional and artistic people who travel a lot.

Coastal decor (AKA Beach, nautical or cottage decor) is characterized by lots of beach/ sea-inspired elements. Sheer white curtains, blues, nautical pieces are some of the things you can use to achieve this look. You can add the beauty of an ocean to your space without having to live by the beach or ocean.

In the simplest sentence possible, Contemporary decor has to do with current trends – meaning, what is hot right now. This decor style is one that constantly evolves, based on what is current.

Warm cozy and inviting is how I’d describe the Modern Farmhouse decor style. Someone going for this style should aim to balance both old and new, while decorating with pieces that are in tune with nature. How can you get the farmhouse style look? Think exposed beams, reclaimed woods, vintage pieces and lots of whites.

I really thought my decor style was glam until I started to investigate the pieces and elements that an interior decorator would use to create a glam space and I was like ‘Nah, not my style at all”. The glam chic style features lots of extravagant texture with a luxury feel. You’ll notice a room with this style has metallic accents, chandeliers, faux furs, glitters and crystals.

This style is mostly about exposed materials – brick, stone, steel, brass. Most industrial spaces were formally old factories or warehouses and I always appreciate people that keep that charm when decorating their industrial spaces.

MODERN + MID-CENTURY MODERN
These are two different but somewhat similar styles, but I wanted to combine them together. Modern decor features simple colour palettes with clean lines, while mid-century modern decor is all about pops of colour and lots of wood and metals.

Minimalism is based on the principle that less is more. A lot of inspiration is gotten from the Japanese style of design. Most minimalist spaces are made up of black, white or some primary colours. There is also a recommendation to choose quality over quantity if you are into this decor style.

Now this is my personal decor style. Urban Modern is a combination of Industrial, Modern and Contemporary decor styles. Light and airy spaces with functional yet chic decor.

This style began in the 20th century and it’s all about simplicity, functionality and minimalism. Consciously buying functional pieces and making them the focal point of a space is what Scandinavian decor entails.
